Welcome to the Lake Superior Mining News.
This website was formed in May 2009. It’s mission is to post original and factual content regarding metallic sulfide and uranium mining activity and citizen opposition to it in the Lake Superior region.
Due to high demand for metals from rapidly industrializing China and India, the area is potentially facing a metallic sulfide mining boom, with mining giant Rio Tinto interested in projects in Minnesota (Lakeview Project), Wisconsin and Michigan (Eagle and associated projects). Other companies actively involved in exploration include Prime Meridian Resources, Bitterroot Resources, Cameco, Aquila Resources, Franconia Minerals, PolyMet Mining, Duluth Metals and others.
While PolyMet and Aquila Resources are close behind, Rio Tinto’s Eagle Project, located on the Yellow Dog Plains in Marquette County, Michigan, is the furthest along of the projects. Eagle is a nickel, copper and precious metals deposit located within a sulfide body. Roughly half the ore body is owned by the State of Michigan and the project would be constructed on 120 acres of public land.
The project has drawn intense public criticism due to its high potential to produce acid mine drainage (sulfuric acid); affect Native American treaty and cultural rights as well as public land rights; damage rare plant populations and the unique coaster brook trout; and threaten public health. All while creating relatively few, and temporary, jobs.

didn’t know that there was so much info on our parent company (rio) from around the world, until our union started the boraxminers.com web site, and posted links to your web site. I did however know that unions around the world are watching us cause they know they could be next. We at Local 30 are standing strong. In the many yrs that I’ve been here we have never gone past our contracted deadline (Nov 4th). Another words over the yrs we’ve given away the ability to negotiate. We undestood from the beginning that this contract negotiations was going to be a dog fight. This company has basically turned an 80 page contract into 8 pages, because our current contract language “restricted rio from doing business efficently”. I think they just needed to dumb it down so that they could understand it. Thanks for helping to expose rio for what they really are. !!!!!SHARKS!!!!!!
